Sue Ellen Lee

WEEMS—Sue Ellen Lee of Weems lost her brave decade-long battle with illness on September 18, 2021.

She graduated from The University of Virginia with a Masters of Education in 1982, and went on to a long career teaching in Fairfax Public Schools, where she implemented the program to have American sign language as a second language added to the curriculum. She also worked as a counselor for many years at Golden Slipper Camp in the Pocono Mountains in Pennsylvania.

She is predeceased by her mother, Shirley Keane Neff; father, J. Cail Lee; aunts Jane Keane Polonsky and Phyllis Sue Keane; and her beloved dog, Blue Boy.

She is survived by her sister, Merrie Palmiotto; nephew, Brent Palmiotto (Becki); great-nephew Brennan; great-niece Brisa; uncle, Stan Polonsky; cousins, Stan Polonsky Jr., Tom Polonsky, Peter Polonsky, Henri Chase, Michael Chase and their families, Genny Chase and adoptive son, Geoff Oppenhiemer.

She also leaves behind longtime friend and caregiver Eunice Harris. Angela Jones, Mendy Coates and Farrah Coates also helped to care for “Aunt Sue” in her final days. Eunice’s pet Sophia Grace was her faithful canine companion and provided many years of emotional support.

A celebration of life will be held on her birthday, October 18, at 14 Norwood Street in Kilmarnock at 1 p.m.

A private family memorial service will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Northumberland County Animal Shelter in Heathsville.

Currie Funeral Home LLC of Kilmarnock handled the arrangements.
