Sutton to present virtual program on free Blacks serving in the American Revolution

The Lancaster Virginia Historical Society’s “Zooming In On Lancaster County History: Thursdays at 3:00” virtual speaker series will continue at 3 p.m. Thursday, February 18.

Karen E. Sutton, a genealogist, family historian and doctorate candidate in African American History at Morgan State University, will present “Free Blacks in Lancaster and Northumberland during the American Revolution.”

There were at least 14 free Black men from the lower Northern Neck counties who fought in the Revolutionary War, according to Sutton. They included nine members of the Nickens family, plus members of the Laws, Pinn, Causey and Sorrell families.

The  Zoom webinar is free for LVHS members and $5 for others. All viewers must register…
