LANCASTER—Svend Anker Madsen, known to all as Anker, passed away peacefully at home on January 20, 2025, at the age of 88. A devoted husband, father and grandfather, he leaves behind a legacy of love, dedication and passion.
Anker was born in Svendborg, Denmark, on July 12, 1936. He grew up in a small rural village in Denmark as the fourth child out of five. As was the custom in Denmark at that time, he left school when he was 14 and got his first job sailing with his father. After a couple of years sailing, he returned to land to complete his military service and to study at the Danish Navigation School in Svendborg, where he graduated as a radio officer. Until late in life, he could still de-code morse code in real time!
After completing his military service, he sailed for Maersk Line as a radio officer. The sea brought him all around the world. In the summer of 1962, he met the love of his life, Gale, while sailing home for vacation on Norwegian America Line’s Stavangerfjord.
Anker and Gale were married in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on October 29, 1964, and honeymooned for six months, sailing around the world on Chastine Maersk while Anker worked. In 1965, Anker retired from sailing and began working for the Danish Defense Department in a civilian capacity. As computers and IT started taking off, so did his career. In 1970, Anker left the Defense Department and again worked for Maersk Line, but this time in the newly started EDP department. In 1986, the family moved to New Jersey, where Anker established Maersk Data USA. Later, in 1996, he and Gale moved to Madras (now Chennai) in India for four years, where he also established a Maersk Data company.
The sea was never far away from Anker and all through his life it played a significant role. In both Denmark and the USA, family vacations and many weekends were all about sailing. It was on one of their many sails in the Chesapeake Bay that they discovered Lancaster. Here they purchased the property where they would build their dream home and retire in 2000. “The most beautiful place on earth” Anker would often say. Many happy memories were created here with the entire family, now grown with spouses and grandchildren.
Here, he and Gale both became very active in the Yankee Point Yacht Club and focused on creating a sustainable club with permanence to it. For many years, Anker served on the board and was an active racer. His many trophies speak to both his dedication and capability.
His accomplishments are many and to all who knew him, he was a smart, dedicated and passionate person—extremely resourceful and capable in all regards, yet always humble. He was kind and supportive with a great sense of humor up to the last moments—always balancing his own capabilities with empowering others.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Gale; and their children, Chris and Debbie, their spouses, Victorien and Cliff; and five grandchildren, Eva, Svend, Nils, Stephanie and Robert.
The family would like to thank all those who lovingly helped care for Anker during his last year, especially Dekota and Shaunte and their employees at The Right Care, and Kayla from Hospice of Virginia.
A celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, February 27, at Yankee Point Yacht Club, 734 Oak Hill Road, Lancaster.
He will be sorely missed by all whose lives he touched. May he rest in peace.
