Sylvia A. O’Bier Bartlett

Sylvia A. O’Bier Bartlett

CALLAO—Sylvia Annette O’Bier Bartlett, 75, departed her earthly life on Saturday, December 11, 2021, at home surrounded by her loving family.

Sylvia was the daughter of the late Clifton Russell O’Bier and the late Allene Hall O’Bier Ashburn. She was the beloved wife of 55 years of John Emmett Bartlett. She retired from Eastern Virginia Bankshares after a 31-year career. Sylvia was a lifelong resident of the Northern Neck and a lifelong member of Coan Baptist Church.

Sylvia loved her family beyond measure. She adored her family and home and made them her priority despite a busy career. She enjoyed cooking, canning and growing flowers. Sylvia began her career at the Bank of Northumberland (later EVB) when the bank was still in a trailer, and she was a brand-new teller in training. Sylvia rose up through the ranks at the bank, retiring as assistant vice president and branch manager. She was also a graduate of the Virginia Bankers School of Bank Management at the University of Virginia.

Despite her priorities at work and home, Sylvia still found time to do things for others. She and her dear friend Beverly O’Bier started the Coan Baptist Church Scholarship fund, and it continues to this day, with educational funding having been provided to scores of deserving young people from the community.

Left to cherish Sylvia’s remarkable memory are her husband, John; her son, Jeffery E. Bartlett (Katherine); her daughter, Amy R. Bartlett; her granddaughter, Abby Bartlett (Dakota Carroll); her grandson, John R. Bartlett; her great-granddaughter, Paisley Carroll; and her brother, Bill O’Bier (Ray). She is also survived by tons of extended family, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends; and her precious pup, Daisy Mae.

Sylvia was predeceased by her parents; her brother, Clifton O’Bier and his wife, Mona O’Bier.

The family would like to make special mention of Sylvia’s dedicated and loving caregivers. Eunice Harris, Bonnie Estep, LaVerne Pierce, Beverly Lovelace and Heather Massey were all so patient and generous of spirit with Sylvia. Additionally, the Riverside Hospice team provided wonderful care as well.

A funeral service celebrating Sylvia’s life was held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, December 15, 2021, at the Welch Funeral Home Marks Chapel. The Reverend Lee Farmer officiated. Pallbearers were Dakota Carroll, Johnny Dungan, James Dungan, Shiny Swann, B.J. Walker and Dustin Westman. Honorary Pallbearers were Edlin Dawson and Wayne O’Bier. Burial followed in the family plot in Coan Baptist Church Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family would love that you honor Sylvia’s beloved charity, the Coan Baptist Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 156, Heathsville, VA  22473.
