Tavern Woodworkers Guild crafts crosses for St. Stephen’s

Rice’s Hotel/Hughlett’s Tavern Woodworkers Guild members crafted nine custom-made wooden crosses for The Way of the Cross service on Good Friday at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, Heathsville.

Guild president Ben Green, a member of St. Stephen’s, spearheaded the project. Guild member Sid Mace donated the wood—local pine which he milled himself. “It is fitting that the wood is local since the church building, floors and pews of St. Stephen’s are constructed entirely of local wood,” said senior warden Ruth Green.

Tavern members cut, joined and finished the six-foot crosses in record time. “Many hands make light work,” said B. Green. “It was a pleasure making the crosses and it gave the woodworkers an opportunity to work on a joint project, which is always a good thing.”
