
MATHEWS—For the past two years, the Northern Neck/Middle Peninsula Area Band was canceled due to shutdowns and restrictions.
In February, band students were not able to have live auditions. Rather than cancel the event again, students recorded auditions, and the recordings were sent to judges. It was done in a way so that the judges did not know who was performing.
“It was definitely a different way than I’ve ever done it before,” said Lancaster Middle School band director Kenny Flester. “But I’m very glad we were able to figure out a way to make it happen. We haven’t had an Area Band concert since 2019.”
On March 25 and 26, the students who had passed the audition met at Mathews High School and were able to….
