Woman’s club
The Woman’s Club of Northumberland County (WCNC) will hold a business meeting on Tuesday, January 11, at the WCNC Clubhouse, 2928 Northumberland Highway, Lottsburg.
Members will gather at noon for refreshments; the meeting will begin at 12:30 p.m. The speaker will be attorney James “Alfie” Butts. New members are welcome to join the WCNC at this time. Masks are encouraged.
NPL trustees
The Northumberland Public Library board of trustees will meet at 5 p.m. Wednesday, January 12, at the the library, 7204 Northumberland Highway, Heathsville.

n Birthday event
Stratford Hall, 483 Great House Road, Stratford, will host a free Lee Family Birthday Event from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. January 15. Richard Henry Lee, Francis Lightfoot Lee, Henry “Light Horse Harry” Lee and Robert E. Lee were all born at Stratford during January.
The celebration will include a new exhibit, Stratford at the Crossroads: Atlantic Cultures & the Creation of America, themed tours of the Great House and discounts in the gift shop. Visitors are asked to bring an item to help stock the Healthy Harvest Food Bank.
ULVRS chili
The Upper Lancaster Volunteer Rescue Squad (ULVRS) recently announced a chili and cornbread fundraiser. The fee is $10 per quart. Send order including name, phone number and quantity of quarts with payment to P.O. Box 176, Lively, VA 22507.
Orders must be received by Wednesday, January 19, and can be picked up from noon-2 p.m. Saturday, January 29, at the ULVRS, 123 Norris Road, Lively, or call 804-269-1421.
The Ohio Company
Stratford Hall will offer a virtual program at 7 p.m. January 20. Historian Jason Cherry will discuss Thomas Lee’s role in the establishment of The Ohio Company, the world’s most powerful land company of the era.

Shrimp & Oyster Dinner
The Upper Lancaster Volunteer Fire Department will hold an all-you-can-eat Shrimp & Oyster Dinner February 5 at the Lively Firehouse, 5170 Mary Ball Road, Lively. Doors will open at 3:30 p.m., dinner will be served from 4-7 p.m.
The fee is $50 per person, free for ages 12 and younger. Purchase tickets at 462-5404, 436-2276 or Saturdays until 1 p.m. at the firehouse. The last day for tickets is January 22.
Country breakfast
Lancaster Union Lodge #88 A.F. & A.M. will serve an all-you-can-eat country breakfast from 7-10 a.m. on second Saturdays, at the Lodge, 48 North Main Street, Kilmarnock. The fee is $10. Ages 8 and younger eat free.
The menu will include fluffy scrambled eggs (fried eggs on request), pancakes (blueberry and plain), biscuits, sausage gravy, sausage links, bacon, cheesy grits, home-fried potatoes, fried apples, warm syrup, fruit cocktail, coffee, tea, juice and milk. Orders to go available also.
Chocolate
Stratford Hall will offer a free virtual lecture and cooking demonstration at 7 p.m. February 12. Dr. Kelley Fanto Deetz, resident historical chef Dontavius Williams and celebrity chef Chris Scott will present Caesar’s Kitchen: Chocolate and Slavery at Stratford Hall.
The program is funded by the Forrest E. Mars Jr. Chocolate History Research Grant, Mars Wrigley. Pre-registration is required. Register at Register at stratfordhall.org.
Burns Night
The Kilmarnock & District Pipe Band will present the 22nd annual Burns Night celebration, January 29, at Masonic Lodge #100, 1434 Goodluck Road, Kilmarnock. Doors will open at 6 p.m. and the program will begin at 7 p.m.
Tickets are $30 each. The event will offer a concert, snacks and set-ups to enhance the edibles (BYOB) brought by audience members. Tickets are available at The Local in Irvington, Chesapeake Bank in Kilmarnock, Blue Ridge Bank branches in Kilmarnock and White Stone and Primis Bank in Burgess. Beekeeper class
The Northern neck Beekeepers Club will present an 8-week beginning beekeeper class from 7-9 p.m. on Mondays, beginning January 31, at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church Parish Hall, Heathsville.
The fee is $100 per bee family. Fee covers class materials and one year membership in the club. Pre-registration preferred, contact [email protected].
Orchestra tickets
The Northern Neck Orchestra’s 2021-22 season will continue March 5 and May 13 at the Lancaster Middle School Theater, 191 School Street, Kilmarnock; and May 14 at the Northumberland High School Theater, 201 Academic Lane, Claraville. Performances will begin at 7:30 p.m. and will be preceded by a pre-concert talk at 6:45 p.m.
Admission is by season subscription or $36 for individual performances. Students are admitted free. Tickets can be purchased at the door or www.northernneckorchestra.org.
Oyster roast
Mary Ball Washington Chapter of the Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge will hold an oyster roast from 2-5 p.m. March 27 at 838 Long Point Lane in Topping. The fee is $40 per person, prepaid.
