Steamboats
The January 9 and 17 “Steamboats on the Chesapeake” viewings at Compass Cinema Six, Compass Entertainment Complex, 100 Entertainment Drive, Irvington, are sold out. A third January viewing is planned.
Tickets are $10 and can be purchased from the Kilmarnock Museum, 296-0930, and the Steamboat Era Museum, 438-6888.
Genealogy
The Middle Peninsula African-American Genealogical and Historical Society will hold a virtual meeting at 11 a.m. Saturday, January 10. The speaker will be historian Judith Giesberg, author of Last Seen: The Enduring Search by Formerly Enslaved People to Find Their Lost Families.

Lee Lecture
Dr. Edward G. Lengel will deliver the 2026 Lee Lecture, “The Road Home: Light-Horse Harry Lee’s Return from the Revolutionary War,” at 2 p.m. January 18 at Stratford Hall Historic Preserve, 483 Great House Road, Stratford.
The lecture will be held in the Stratford Hall Council House. Admission is $10 with a $5 discount for Friends of Stratford members. A virtual admission option is available. Advance tickets may be purchased at stratfordhall.org. Pre-registration is encouraged, but not required.
Burns tribute
The Kilmarnock & District Pipe Band will hold a Tribute to Robert Burns on January 24 at the Palestine Lodge #100, 1434 Goodluck Road, Kilmarnock. Doors will open at 1 p.m., the program will begin at 2 p.m. The bring-your-own bottle event will offer snacks and set-ups.
Tickets are $30 each and are available at The Local, Irvington; Chesapeake Bank, Kilmarnock and White Stone; and Primus Bank, Burgess. Checks can be mailed by calling John at 577-3349. Book talk
The Reedville Fishermen’s Museum will host a book talk and signing at 6:30 p.m. February 2 at the Fairfields Volunteer Fire Department, 119 Main Street, Reedville.
Participants will include Tom Briggs, author of War on the Inland Sea, and author Susan Swift and illustrator Heather Cockrell of The ABCs of Oystering on the Chesapeake Bay.
Book signing
The Reedville Fishermen’s Museum will host a book talk and signing at 6:30 p.m. March 3 at the Fairfields Volunteer Fire Department, 119 Main Street, Reedville. The featured guest will be Joseph W. Smith, author of Menhaden.
