First Friday

An opening reception for “You Be the Judge” will be held from 5-7 p.m. Friday, January 3, at RAL Art Center, 19 North Main Street, Kilmarnock.

The public is invited to meet some of the exhibiting artists, enjoy light refreshments and vote for a favorite piece of art in the exhibit.

Shrimp & oysters

The Upper Lancaster Volunteer Fire Department will hold an “all-you-can-eat” shrimp and oyster dinner January 25 at the Lively Firehouse, 5170 Mary Ball Road, Lively. Doors will open at 3:30 p.m., dinner will be served from 4-7 p.m.

The fee is $40. Hot dogs, bean soup and soft drinks are included. Beer and wine are extra. Purchase tickets by January 19 at Chesapeake Bank and Corner Bar and Grill in Lively, Noblett in Kilmarnock, Sonabank in Burgess, or the Lively Firehouse on Saturdays, January 4, 11 and 18.

Senior living

Northumberland Public Library’s Ye Olde Book Shoppe, 7072 Northumberland Highway, Heathsville, in partnership with Commonwealth Senior Living, will host “A New Year, a New You,” a free series of luncheon talks on senior living.

“Adding Life To Your Years,” will be offered at 11 a.m. Wednesday, January 8. The speaker will be Jill White. To reserve a seat, call the library 580-5051, or sign up at the front desk of the library, 7204 Northumberland Highway, Heathsville.

Burns Night

The Kilmarnock and District Pipe Band will hold their 21st annual Burns Night event January 25 at Masonic Lodge #100, 1434 Goodluck Road, Kilmarnock. Doors will open at 5 p.m.

Tickets are $40 each and are available until January 18 at The Local in Irvington, Chesapeake Bank in Kilmarnock and Virginia Commonwealth Bank branches in Kilmarnock, White Stone and Burgess.
