Genealogy classes
The Lancaster Virginia Historical Society (LVHS)  Fall Genealogy Classes will continue from 1-3:30 p.m. October 23, 30 and November 6 at Lancaster Community Library, 16 Town Centre Drive, Kilmarnock. The October 23 topic will be Digging in the Dirt—All About Land Records; October 30, Have You Tried These? – Unknown and Lesser-Used Records; and November 6, Dead Men Do Tell Tales – Estate Records and Cemeteries..

The fee is $25 for LVHS members, $30 for others. Paid registration is required by 4 p.m. the day before each class. Register at lancastervahistory.org or 462-7280.

NNK250 talk
Northumberland Preservation Inc. will host a talk by Northern Neck Planning District Commission economic development and tourism coordinator Lisa Hull at 3 p.m. Friday, October 24, at Historic Shiloh School, Shiloh School and Balls Neck roads, Kilmarnock.

She will address local events for NNK250 and the connection between the semiquincentennial and the Northern Neck National Heritage Area.

Bluegrass
Bluegrass and classic country music will be featured at 7 p.m. Saturday, October 25, at the Urbanna Firehouse, 335 Virginia Street, Urbanna. Sing along, bring an instrument.

Donations are appreciated for the Middlesex Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary.

Quilt raffle
Two lap-size quilts, sewn by Barbara Kauneckas and quilted by Ann Sullivan, will be raffled at the Bluff Point Community League yard sale from 8 a.m.-noon, Saturday, October 25, at 2595 Bluff Point Road, Kilmarnock.

Tickets are $5 each, or five for $20. Tickets may be purchased at the yard sale or by calling 435-7830. Proceeds will benefit the roof replacement project.

Historical society
The King and Queen County Historical Society will hold its quarterly meeting at 3 p.m. Sunday, October 26, at Shackelfords Chapel UMC, 3727 Buena Vista Road, Cologne. Dr. A.W. Lewis will speak of the history of the John Lewis family cemetery near Plain View.

Candy for Kids
White Stone Candy for Kids will be held from 5-7 p.m. on Halloween, October 31, throughout the White Stone business district.

Families are invited to bring children in costumes downtown for trick-or-treating among participating decorated businesses as well as a trunk-or-treat event at the firehouse. Times may differ for trick-or-treating in residential areas.

Trunk-or-Treat
Halloween Trunk-or-Treat, sponsored by the Irvington Village Improvement Association, will begin at 5 p.m. October 31 at the Irvington Town Commons, 98 King Carter Drive, Irvington.

The event is open to ages 12 and younger in Halloween garb and accompanied by a parent. A children and pet parade will begin at 6 p.m. Pets in costume are also welcome.

Trick-or-treating in Reedville
The Reedville small-town Halloween trick-or-treating will start around dusk October 31. In addition to door-to-door trick-or-treating along Main Street, the Reedville Fishermen’s Museum will offer a nautical-themed amusement.

Basket Auction
A Basket Auction and Fashion Show will be held at 10 a.m. November 1 at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Kilmarnock. Tea, coffee and refreshments will be served.

The event is a fundraiser sponsored by the Virginia Gamma Alpha Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa. Proceeds will be used to benefit teacher scholarships, St. Jude Hospital and the Alzheimer’s Association.

Fall fun
Fall Family Fun Day will be held from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. November 1, at Stratford Hall Historic Preserve, 483 Great House Road, Stratford. Activities will include tractor wagon rides, take-home crafts, lawn games, scavenger hunts, pumpkin painting and even pumpkin bowling.

Admission is $5 for ages 6 and older and free for ages 5 and younger, Friends of Stratford members and Museums for All participants. Purchase tickets at stratfordhall.org, or the gate.

Marine Corps Birthday Ball
Marine Corps League Detachment 1062 will host a Marine Corps Birthday Ball at Indian Creek Yacht and Country Club at 5 p.m. November 7 to commemorate the 250th birthday of the Marine Corps.

Festivities will include cocktail hour, dinner, traditional cake cutting ceremony, music, dancing and remarks by retired USMC Sergeant Major Robin Fortner. For reservations, contact commandant Jim Schafer at 540-429-0371, or schaferjb@aol.com.

Christmas show
Kilmarnock Museum will sponsor a bus trip to the Old Dominion Barn Dance Christmas Show December 13, featuring Ronnie McDowell. Bus will depart from Chesapeake Commons in Kilmarnock at 11:30 a.m. $140 fee covers roundtrip fare, show tickets, and snacks on the bus.

The bus will stop for dinner on the return trip at Nick’s Spaghetti and Steak House in Shacklefords, buy-you-own. For tickets, call Mary Brent, 238-8738, or Carroll Lee Ashburn, 296-0930.

Post 86
American Legion Adams Post 86 meets at 5 p.m. on third Tuesdays at the Lancaster Community Library, 16 Town Centre Drive, Kilmarnock.
