VACo recognizes model programs, including Windmill Point public project

RICHMOND—The Virginia Association of Counties (VACo) on Friday, May 15, announced 40 recipients of its 2026 Achievement Awards, which recognize excellence in local government programs.

VACo received 103 submissions. Winning entries focused on addressing issues of public safety, community development and health, as well as finding solutions to challenges that counties encounter daily.

“Virginia’s counties continue to demonstrate that local government is where innovation meets action,” said VACo executive director Dean Lynch said. “This year’s submissions reflect the creativity, leadership, and commitment county officials bring every day to solving real challenges and improving the quality of life for residents across the Commonwealth. Congratulations to all winners and thank you to all who participated.”

Lancaster County received an Achievement Award for the Windmill Point County Maritime Recreational Campus (WPCMRC). The WPCMRC opened to the public in November 2025 and includes a 450-foot-long pier stretching into the Rappahannock River, enhanced Westland Beach, restrooms and parking area. Fishing from the pier is allowed without an individual license.
