Coaches Welby Saunders and Scotty George have high expectations for the varsity Red Devils baseball team.
Despite a few early season regional losses and two losses to open Northern Neck District play, hopes are high for a post-season run.
“We started off extremely slow, which is unfortunate, but we hope to peak at the right time at the end of season,” said George. “We have a great mix of seniors, juniors and sophomores that we kind of rely on equally to be successful this year. It’s a team that we knew early in the season could be very successful.”
Early on, the Devils were dealing with some absences due to winter sports and injuries.
“Part of the slow start was that we had two of our starters, Kelvin Davis and Sean Thomas, still playing basketball and then our catcher Toni Thomas got hurt and that was going to be a big loss if he hadn’t been able to return. But he’s working through it,” said George. “It’s been hard to keep our whole starting line-up on the field.”
Despite the obstacles, the Devils are 6-4 heading into the second half….
