RICHMOND—Velma Dean Carter was born on December 18, 1953, in Weems. She died Wednesday, March 27, at approximately 7:32 p.m.
She graduated from Lancaster High School in 1973. After graduation, she attended Virginia Seminary and College in Lynchburg. Upon the sudden closing of the school, she transferred to Norfolk State College and remained there until her junior year.
Velma was a member of Sharon Baptist Church. She was employed by the Lancaster County Public School District as a classroom aide, the Dupont Company, Phillip Morris and Walmart.
Velma was predeceased by her son, Orlando Shane Carter; parents, Arthur and Deliliah Carter; brother, Arthur Carter Jr.; and nephew, Matthew Russell.
She is survived by her son, Michael Sears of California; three grandchildren; twin sister, Selma Curry-Harrison of Baltimore, Md.; and sisters, Portia Roberts, Linda Whitelow and Ora Russell, all of Richmond.
A funeral was held Saturday, April 13, at Sharon Baptist Church, Weems. Interment followed in the church cemetery.
