
PLAINS, PA—For 49 Septembers, Mr. Carpenter (Mr. C) welcomed students into his classroom with a smile. Walter S. Carpenter passed away April 1, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of learning and compassion.
He was more than just a teacher. He was a mentor who believed in every child’s potential. He was a husband, father, grandfather, brother, principal, friend, coach and so much more. He was a member of Smithland Baptist Church in Heathsville, where he served as a deacon and a member of the church choir.
He was the son of the late Ethna Kendig Carpenter and Walter C. Carpenter.
Walter was preceded in death by his wife of 43 years, Shirley Stephens Carpenter.
He leaves behind a loving family, including his sister, Carolyn Bogdan; daughter, Karen Carpenter; granddaughters, Helena and Kacey Amigon; his chiweenie, Pinky; and a community of grateful students who will never forget his impact.
A memorial visitation was held April 11 at the Yanaitis Funeral Home Inc., 55 Stark Street, Plains, followed by a celebration of Mr. C’s life. The service was officiated by his dear friends.
There also will be a service at Smithland Baptist Church in Heathsville, a time and date yet to be decided.
