Where convenience meets community: The country store difference

Miss Ellen Lally and her family have operated Ellen’s Country Store in upper Lancaster for 32 years.

Within 20 minutes of speaking with Miss Ellen Lally early in the morning last Thursday, two of her regular customers completed their purchases with quarters brought from home. Miss Ellen had taped a sign to the cash register saying she was short on quarters, and her customers took notice.

“Up here, we all look out for one another, ya know—everyone looks out for me as much as I look out for them,” Miss Ellen said.

Miss Ellen and her husband have owned and operated Ellen’s Country Store in upper Lancaster County for 32 years with the help of their children and grandchildren.
