Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger on Thursday, January 22, declared a State of Emergency due to winter weather that eventually impacted the Commonwealth beginning Saturday and….it ’s not over yet. Winter Storm Fern dumped snow and/or ice from Texas to Maine including the lower Northern Neck where approximately 3 inches fell Saturday night. Private contractors like Kevin’s Lawn Care & Maintenance (above) joined the Virginia Department of Transportation effort to keep the roads clear as early as Sunday afternoon. But freezing rain and single-digit temperatures followed. As of Tuesday, schools, churches, government offices and many businesses remained closed. Dominion Energy Virginia and Northern Neck Electric Cooperative reported minimal outages locally, that were soon resolved. However, the forecast is calling for possible flurries Saturday and Sunday and below freezing temperatures until Monday. More photos appear inside. Photo by Lisa Hinton-Valdrighi
