YPRCC readies for racing and cruising

The Yankee Point Racing and Cruising Club (YPRCC) has begun the 2020 sailing season with racing seminars and plans for a repeat of the fabulous 2019 sailing year.

On February 29, fleet captain Anker Madsen conducted a seminar of the effects of lift and drag on a displacement sailboat, reported publicity chairman John Henley. The well-attended seminar focused on the effects of these parameters and their relationship to the flight of an airplane which is affected by the same physical phenomena.

The thought that a 1,600-pound Santana 20 or a 3,000-pound Typhoon sailboat are subjected to the same lift and drag forces that affect a 700,000 pound 747 is remarkable but basically true. Graphs and charts were used to clarify these effects, said Henley.
