General Assembly adjourns 2026 session, to return in April

RICHMOND—With the adjournment of the General Assembly on Saturday, March 14, Gov. Abigail Spanberger said she is “tremendously grateful to legislators for their work this session to address the challenges facing Virginia families, Virginia businesses and Virginia schools. The General Assembly has passed a slate of legislation squarely focused on making life less expensive for Virginians.

“I’m particularly proud to see lawmakers pass our entire Affordable Virginia Agenda to drive down housing, healthcare, and energy costs for Virginians across our Commonwealth. High costs are top of mind in every community—and our agenda directly responds to those concerns,” she said. In the same statement, Gov. Spanberger also indicated she looks forward to reconvening with the General Assembly.

Despite adjourning, there is still work to be done. The General Assembly will consider any of the governor’s actions and complete work on the budget when it reconvenes April 22, according to the Virginia Legislative Information system, lis.virginia.gov.

Lawmakers left Richmond without passing a budget bill for fiscal year 2027-28. One of the biggest sticking points between the House and Senate versions is a 5.3% retail sales and use tax on data centers.
