Northumberland school board reorganizes

by Audrey Thomasson

CLARAVILLE—The Northumberland school board last week unanimously re-elected District 4 member Betty Christopher chairman and District 5 member Gayle Sterrett vice chairman.

Few citizens attended the January 16 meeting, which was held a week late due to snow closures on the board’s regular meeting night.

Members also adopted a standing meeting schedule of 6 p.m. the second Monday of each month, preceded by closed sessions at 5 p.m.

Among committee and board assignments, Christopher was appointed to serve as a delegate to the Virginia School Board Association, with District 3 member Gerald Howard, alternate.

District 1 member Dana O’Bier will continue on the Northern Neck Regional Special Education Program and Technical Center joint boards.

In her first meeting, District 2 member Mary Hooper was appointed to serve on the Chesapeake Bay Governor’s School board and as liaison to the Northumberland County Education Association.

The board also designated director of special education Adam Letizia as the compliance officer for policies dealing with equal educational opportunities, Section 504-non-discrimination and equal employment opportunities. High school assistant principal Wanda Henderson was designated as alternate.
