Among Colored People

A large crowd attended services at the New St. John’s Baptist Church last Sunday. A white friend seemed to have enjoyed the sermon. We want our white friends to know that a hearty welcome awaits them at all our services and special seats will be provided.

The Patrons of the Kilmarnock and Mar’s Hill School have agreed to unite and build a school near the New St. John’s Baptist Church.

Mr. and Mrs. Albert Johnson entertained at supper last Sunday Rev. and Mrs. D. H. Chamberylane, Prof. and Mrs. S. W. Lee and Mesdames L. G. Wright and Maggie C. Ball.

The Pastor’s Club of the New St. John’s Baptist Church are preparing for their friends who come next Monday night.

LVHS Note: Under the leadership of Dr. M. E. Norris, a fundraising campaign for the “New Kilmarnock School” was started about 1928. Construction began in September 1930 and was completed in October 1933 at a cost of approximately $15,000. The building was the first brick elementary school for Black children in the Northern Neck and featured four rooms and an auditorium. In December 1934, it was officially named the “Morgan E. Norris Graded School.”
