Northumberland residents repeat alarm regarding proposed 21% tax increase

HEATHSVILLE—A public hearing on Thursday, June 4, turned out to be a repeat of the last budget hearing, where Northumberland residents voiced concern and frustration with the county’s inability to control finances.

HEATHSVILLE—A public hearing on Thursday, June 4, turned out to be a repeat of the last budget hearing, where Northumberland residents voiced concern and frustration with the county’s inability to control finances.

Heathsville resident Robert Morgan said he and his wife “moved here in an affordable county, and we just continue to see our taxes and our assessment value increase. We’re retired and on a fixed income and this county is going to force us out of here. We have no children in school, the roads, the emergency service, what you all have to offer in this county is minimal, but then we’re starting to pay Fairfax County-like taxes.”

In addition to concerns shared by those on a fixed incomes, Reedville resident Jay Lightfoot saw a concerning trend on “compound taxes,” highlighting the over 40% increase in real estate taxes over the past three years if supervisors approv….
