REEDVILLE—Janice S. Barrett, 97, of Reedville passed away peacefully on July 27, 2026, at Rappahannock Westminster-Canterbury in Irvington.
She was born in Ashland on June 1,1929, and was the youngest daughter of James and Louise Spicer.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, George M. Barrett; grandson, James Christopher Kuykendall; and her sister, Virginia Weliky (Irving).
She is survived by her daughter, Madelene Cutting (Kenny); son, Tommy Barrett (Rich); grandson, Lee Kuykendall (Morgan); great-grandson, Carter Kuykendall; and many nieces and nephews.
She attended Randolph-Macon College in Ashland. She was an elementary school teacher in the Northumberland County school system for 30 years, changing children’s lives with her kind and caring approach. She was a 50-year resident of Reedville. She attended Bethany United Methodist Church in Reedville and was a long-standing member of the women’s circle. She loved living in Reedville, as a celebrated “come here,” and was so thankful for her many friends and wonderful neighbors.
She lived the last two amazing years of her life at Rappahannock Westminster-Canterbury. Her family cannot express enough gratitude to the staff for all the extraordinary and loving care that they gave to her and to the family.
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, August 27, at Currie Funeral Home in Kilmarnock. Interment at Hollywood Cemetery will be private.
