LOTTSBURG—Thomas L. (Tommy, Tom) Mountcastle, 72, peacefully gained his wings Thursday, August 6, 2026, in Lottsburg.
Tommy was the son of Dean Lamar (Bill) Mountcastle and Kathryn Dobyns Mountcastle, both having predeceased him.
He is survived by his two sons, Thomas Watkins “Watt” Mountcastle (Meghan) and Bailey Tyler Mountcastle (Sydney) of Richmond; his sisters, Kathryn “Kaki” Light of Lottsburg, Anne M. Johnson of Easton, Maryland, and Susan M. Maxwell of Sherwood, Maryland; his grandson, Grayson Tyler Mountcastle; his granddaughter, Mary Mason Mountcastle; a nephew and two nieces.
Tommy graduated from Varina High School in 1971. He attended Chowan College in Murfreesboro, N.C. for one semester, and went on to take classes at the University of Richmond and Virginia Commonwealth University, earning his associate’s in 1974. He continued working and taking classes and received his bachelor’s from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1981.
Tommy worked at Curles Neck Farm after graduation and before leaving for college. Once home he worked at Curles Neck Dairy Plant while attending classes, served as finance director for the Commonwealth of Virginia from 1974 to 1981, served as a business consultant for The Martinique of Dance from 1979 to 1986, planning officer for The Computer Company from 1981 to 1982, head of Division Systems Development from 1982 to 1983, adjunct professor at J. Sargent Reynolds Community College 1983-1985, director of information systems for Richmond Memorial Hospital from 1984 to 1986, worked for The Computer Company (TCC) until starting his own business, Computer Maintenance Solutions (CMS) in 1990. He served as president and chief executive officer until its sale to Halifax in the middle 90s. He then went to work for James River Technologies and finally ended his working career at CSC Leasing in 2019.
Tommy was chairman of the board of trustees for Chesterfield Performing Arts Co. from 1983-1987; president of the board of directors Virginia Alliance for Art, Chesterfield Chapter from 1985-1987; president of Associated System Management 1986-1987 and received an Achievement award for 1983-1984; member of the Metro Chamber of Commerce; member of the board for The Virginia Boys Home from 1991-2022; member of CASA; member Leadership Metro Richmond; and was a major contributor to The Richmond Forum. He received many awards and certificates over the years.
Tommy was a hard-working man who loved music, dancing, cooking, entertaining and spending time with his boys. He spent a great deal of his off time at his river home “Mallards Point.” His greatest love was for his two boys. He never missed a chance to spend time with them. The river became the hangout for them with their friends over the years.
A funeral service for Tommy will be held at Melrose Methodist Church, 1317 Lewisetta Road, Lottsburg, at 1 p.m. Saturday, August 15. Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. He will be laid to rest in the church cemetery following the service.
