MACorp models perseverance for teenagers

For some 40 area teens, the Macedonia Community Development Corporation (MACorp) Summer Youth Camp in July was a week of fun and career exploration. Behind the scenes, it was also the culmination of hard work and determination by organizers to make sure the teens would continue to have the potentially life-changing experiences they need.

After a major leadership change and funding cuts, MACorp had to rethink the program rather than disappoint teens who look forward to returning every summer. Two summer camps—Girls Empowerment Camp and Camp Success While Achieving Godliness (S.W.A.G.)—were combined into one. And activities that would normally take place in a two-week camp, were condensed.

“Because of funding, we combined everything into one week,” said MACorp executive directer Tracey Harding. “We didn’t get to do that overnight stay that we normally do for the kids, but did do a couple of short trips to Luray Caverns and Virginia Union University for a college tour.
