KINSALE—John McKendree “Jack” Sichol, 74, of Kinsale passed away peacefully on September 6, 2026.
Born on September 11, 1951, in Richmond, Jack came to the Northern Neck in 1967 when his father purchased Hales Point Marina. What began as a family move became the beginning of a lifelong connection to the community he would come to call home.
Jack spent 16 years with Merita Bread, where he learned the corner-store business and developed an appreciation for the importance of knowing and taking care of his customers. He left Merita and became one of the original Virginia Lottery representatives, a career that brought him to Carmel Church. When the opportunity arose to open a store in Kinsale, he opened Jack’s This ’n That. He would go on to open a second location in Montross called Jack’s T-N-T, before focusing his attention on his final location, which is still operating today, Jack Rabbit Express.
Jack was committed to his community. Whenever severe weather struck, he refused to close the doors to his store, making it his personal mission to ensure the community and the fire department had access to fuel and critical supplies. He volunteered with the Richmond County Little League and was instrumental in running the concession stand after the new ballpark was established. He valued fellowship, serving as a Masonic brother with Warsaw Lodge No. 332 and holding membership with the Callao Moose Lodge 917.
Jack had a vibrant personality and truly never met a stranger. He had a passion for muscle cars and the Washington Commanders, enjoyed playing golf, loved watching a good western movie and looked forward to every new travel adventure. He had a special place in his heart for animals and was known for taking in strays and giving them a safe and loving home. His generosity, humor and friendly spirit ensured he was loved by many, and he will be deeply missed by those who knew him.
He is survived by his wife, Jane, and her son, Watt; sisters, Kornelia Brady of Houston, Texas, and Sister Marcia Sichol, SHCJ of Bryn Mawr, Pa.; brother, Tom Bardon (Judy) of Georgetown, S.C.; sons, Joseph Adam “Joey” (Julie) and John Austin (Sarah) and their mother, Patricia “Pat” Henderson; his stepdaughters, Kimberly Glaws and Kristin Werneth; and his grandchildren, Jackson, Morgan, Myla, Rhys McKendree, Louella, Alice and Rosie, all of whom affectionately knew him as “Poppa Jack.”
Jack was preceded in death by his parents, Ruth and Adam Sichol of Richmond; his brother, Adam “Skip” Sichol; his sister, Ruth Ann; and wife, Martha Sichol.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Cople District Volunteer Fire Department or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, September 12, at Carmel United Methodist Church.
