Red Devils bury Blue Devils, 61-14

by Lisa Hinton-Valdrighi

Lancaster’s Evan Steensma kicked a 34-yard field goal and six PATs in last Saturday’s win over Mathews.

Last Saturday was sunny and mild with a slight breeze, a perfect day for some football … if you were a Lancaster Red Devil. Not so much if you were a Mathews Blue Devil.

After losing its season opener to Sussex Central earlier last week, Lancaster scored at will last weekend, running away with a 61-14 win over Mathews, that wasn’t even that close. The Blue Devils scored their second touchdown in the final minute. Mathews’ first score came on special teams and the Blue Devils never crossed midfield on offense in the first half.

Lancaster took a 14-0 lead early in the first quarter on a 23-yard TD run by Adam Wilmore and one of four touchdown carries by workhorse Chris Dameron. Dameron finished with 16 touches for an impressive 199 yards, four touchdowns and a two-point conversion.

Making his home debut as Lancaster’s new quarterback, Tafari Wall had 32 yards rushing with two touchdowns of 14 yards and one yard. He also threw for 147 yards, including 68 to Calvin Henderson on three catches. One of Henderson’s catches, for 40 yards, set up a 15-yard scoring run by Dameron early in the third quarter.
