Discover Spain with cyclist Steven Reiss

The Lancaster Community Library’s second 2018 Sundays at Two event on January 28 will spotlight the experiences of Steven Reiss as he traveled to Spain and rode his bicycle the length of the Camino de Santiago.

The program will begin at 2 p.m. at LCL, 16 Town Centre Drive, Kilmarnock. There is an elevator to the second floor meeting room.

Reiss began his journey in Roncesvalles, at the eastern edge of the Pyrenees Mountains; 16 days and 660 miles later he reached the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Galicia (northwestern Spain), where tradition has it the remains of the apostle Saint James are buried, reported  committee member Ginny Burnette.

During his three-week journey Reiss more fully understood why millions of pilgrims before him have traveled on the same pilgrimage route dating back to the 9th century, said Burnette.

Many travel the Camino as a form of spiritual journey for their personal growth or as a respite from the bustle of modern life, she said. Others take the route for the challenge of weeks of walking or biking in a foreign land. Today that pathway, also known as “the way of St. James,” continues to serve as a retreat for many modern “pilgrims.”

Reiss’ story is a personal recollection of a journey of discovery—a passage that is different for each pilgrim, or peregrino, who travels the Camino. This is an inspiring story with images and photos.

After a question-and-answer period, light refreshments will be served.
