Most legislation of local interest remains in committees

RICHMOND—Tuesday, February 13, marks crossover day for the 2018 Virginia General Assembly and the House of Delegates and Senate will have to complete their own legislation by midnight.

As of Monday, January 29, 1,609 bills had been introduced in the House, 59 of those had been approved by the House, one continued to next session and 27 had failed.

In the Senate, 993 bills had been introduced, 152 had been approved, 42 continued to next session and 223 had failed, according to Virginia’s Legislative Information System, lis.virginia.gov.

Among bills of local interest, Senate Bill 567, regarding agricultural operations as a nuisance, on January 24 passed the Senate, 40-0. Before the House, the bill was read the first time on January 29 and referred to the agriculture, Chesapeake and natural resources committee.

By a 25-15 vote on January 24, the Senate defeated Senate Bill 552, requiring crab pots and peeler pots to have marine-biodegradable escape panels…
