Supervisors take cautious approach on funding request

LANCASTER—Those who closely follow the charitable giving record of the Lancaster board of supervisors may have detected a shift in direction last week, based on statements from recently installed members.

At the January 25 meeting, Ammon Dunton Jr. asked members for $75,000 in seed money for Mary Ball Washington Museum and Library to purchase the Chilton house property adjacent to the old jail in order to move the expanding genealogical library into a larger facility. He noted the cost would total $350,000, including $145,000 to purchase the house and $205,000 for related renovations.

District 5 supervisor Dr. Robert Westbrook suggested the museum make the request on “…the back end of the project” after they have raised most of the money in the community…
