Ball sentenced to 36 years for killing state police officer

RICHMOND—A Richmond man who grew up in Northumberland County was sentenced October 10 to 36 years in prison for the capital murder of a Virginia State Police officer.

Travis A. Ball, 28, shot Special Agent Michael T. Walter on May 26, 2017, in Richmond’s Mosby Court. Walter, 45, died early the next morning at VCU Medical Center. Following an overnight search, Ball was taken into custody by U.S. marshals and state police with assistance from Northumberland and Lancaster sheriffs’ departments around 6 a.m. May 27 at his sister’s residence in Northumberland County.

Ball entered an Alford plea and Richmond Commonwealth’s Attorney Michael Herring had asked for a 60-year prison sentence for the capital murder plea, which typically is punishable by death or life in prison…
