NPL Summer Reading program to the moon

Each summer the Northumberland Public Library (NPL), Northumberland Elementary School and the Northumberland Family YMCA collaborate to keep the community’s youngest readers engaged with books.

Although they didn’t break last year’s record high of more than 16,000 books, the youth exceeded their goal to read more than 15,000 books.

“It’s still an astounding number of books the kids read—15,216—during the short summer break,” said NPL children’s program coordinator Marilyn Smith. “And it’s that they kept reading while out of school that really matters.”

The reading program celebrated NASA’s 50th anniversary of the moon landing. Children were treated to special space programs, including one for the smallest reader/space explorers, pre-kindergartners.
