The Lancaster High School graphic design class with help from other talented and gifted visual artists recently designed and helped to create a mural on an 11-foot by 4-foot snow plow.
The plow was presented to the class by the Virginia Department of Transportation in November, reported visual arts instructor Sandy Manning. This is a program that is in its first year for the Northern Neck, but has been a national campaign to connect the community and the schools through departments of transportation for years.
Designers were Topanga Bottlemy, Katelyn Dawson, Kame Elbourn and Ardesia Smith. Other helpers with the stencil and painting were Kyran Gaskins, Jamie Howard, Shelbylyn Stoneburner and Tyleigha Reese. Manning provided direction and support with the completion of the plow.
“In spite of cold temperatures and rainy weather, we did it,” said Manning. “Yea, team.”
This plow will be on display through VDOT and will also be used to remove snow during the upcoming winter storms.
The LHS graphic design students generated a fantastic slogan: Plow into Visual Arts, said Manning. There was much to learn in terms of sign making for the completion of this project—brainstorming, researching, drafting, template design and application, stencil making and use, spray painting and rolling of enamel paint onto a steel surface and teamwork for sure.
