New teachers bring a fresh perspective

Lancaster welcomed 14 new teachers this school year.

Anna Kellum, who heads up the district’s Quality Teacher Induction Program, called QTIP, said the program was developed to support new teachers personally and professionally. 

“Your first year is tough,” Kellum said, “Our mentoring program gives new staff a chance to interact with their peers and share triumphs and struggles.” Kellum said that feedback has shown that past participants welcomed the support. “They did not feel alone. It was comforting to know that their peers had the same struggles.”

Like everything else, COVID-19 has limited some aspects of the program. While special social events provided by the Lancaster by the Bay Chamber, the Tides Inn and Virginia Commonwealth Bank had to be canceled, Kellum hopes that they can continue their monthly support and training meetings, although they will take place online….,
