Broadband authority pursues funding; seeks new member

LANCASTER—The Lancaster County Broadband Authority (LCBA) on August 17 submitted an application for a Virginia Telecommunications Initiative (VATI) grant to the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD).

In this grant, Lancaster is part of a coalition of four counties, adding broadband expansion projects in Mathews, Middlesex and Caroline counties to make a stronger regional application, reported LCBA chairman Cassie Thompson.

VATI is Virginia’s signature effort to increase rural broadband availability within the Commonwealth, said Thompson.

“Although funding this year has been reduced from $35 million to $19 million because of reprogramming to cover COVID-19 expenditures, VATI offers an opportunity to complete a smaller project…
