In March 1896, a small group of local residents pledged to help each other in times of need. 125 years later, that pledge is alive and well, protecting tens of thousands of Virginia households insured by Northern Neck Insurance Company (NNINS).
In the 1890s, fire posed a serious risk to rural homeowners. Without electricity, most homes burned wood for heating and cooking. Candles or lanterns provided lighting. Open flames in houses and barns were necessary but dangerous without running water, fire extinguishers, or motorized fire trucks. One stray spark could spell ruin for a family.
