Lancaster readies for the return of students

LANCASTER—Believe it or not, when Monday, August 23, rolls around another school year will begin for students in Lancaster County. Some 1,035 students, from grades pre-K through 12 will walk through the doors, according to superintendent Dan Russell.

Nearly all students will be attending in-person; Russell said only 10 students applied to attend virtually. Those students will receive lessons through Virtual Virginia.

On campus, students will be greeted by many familiar faces but some will be new, as 20 new teachers were hired over the summer.

New teachers started August 9 with a four-day long orientation called QTIP, which stands for Quality Teacher Induction Program. During the week, Anna Kellum took new teachers through topics like classroom management and curriculum. She also treated them to a trolley ride through town and a welcome luncheon at the Tides Inn. The new teachers also had a little extra time in their classrooms to prepare for the upcoming year.

Across the district, measures have been put in place to help ensure the safest possible return to in-person learning. As discussed at the August 10 school board meeting, students, staff and visitors will be required to wear masks while indoors and visitors….
