For over 150 years the Garland family-owned Village Farm has raised beef and crops in “blink and you’ll miss it” Village, at the Northumberland-Richmond county line.
“Historically, we sold shares of beef,” Haydon Garland said of the small cow-calf operation that fed generations of families in the area. When asked if it was a special breed of cow that kept people coming back, he shook his head and said it was the “love.” The farm’s simple mission of raising “happy, healthy cattle” means that small herds of cows are well cared for, grazing freely, without the use of antibiotics and hormones.
The mission of providing for the community continues as Haydon and his wife, Andrea, have refurbished an auto repair/gas station, turning it into a welcoming retail space, Village Farm & Shop, carrying Village Farm grass fed, grass finished steaks, roasts and ground beef.
The couple have expanded on their “happy” offerings to include a line of CBD products created from hemp grown on the farm, which they have been licensed to do since 2018. “We tried other crops, but hemp was a nice complement” to what they were already doing, Haydon said. Using the same philosophy as with their beef, the Garlands focus on small-batch quality CBD and market under the brand name Northern Neck Kannabis.
