Potomac River Oyster Wars historic marker gains approval

RICHMOND—The Virginia Board of Historic Resources recently approved eight new historical markers, including a sign that highlights the violent ending of the nearly century-long Oyster Wars along the Potomac River.

The marker is sponsored by Colonial Beach Greenspace Inc. and will be erected near the intersection of Irving and Monroe Bay avenues in Colonial Beach.

After approval by the Board of Historic Resources, it can take upwards of three months or more before a new marker is ready for installation, reported Stephanie Williams, deputy director of the Virginia Department of Historic Resources. The marker’s sponsor covers the required $2,880 manufacturing expenses for a new sign.
