Vehicle-buggy crash sends three to hospital

EMMERTONAt 8:57 a.m. Saturday, December 17, Virginia State Police (VSP) responded to a crash between a horse and buggy and a single vehicle. The crash occurred in the area of Arnold Lane and Boswell Road in Richmond County, causing eastbound History Land Highway to be shut down for a short time. 

A Chevy Equinox rear-ended the buggy, throwing three of the five people who were riding in the horse-drawn carriage from it, reported VSP Division 1 public  information officer Sgt. Jessica B. Shehan.

One person was med-flighted to VCU Medical Center in Richmond, and two were taken by ambulance to VCU Medical Center in Tappahannock. They suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries. One horse succumbed to injuries on the scene. 

The driver of the Equinox was not injured and was charged with reckless driving, with further charges pending by the Commonwealth Attorney’s Office. 

The crash remains under investigation.
