Even while the vines at Good Luck Cellars in Kilmarnock lay dormant this past winter, they were under around-the-clock observation and protection.
The four-legged members of the vineyard’s Grape Vine Patrol Squad are dedicated to their work, living among the vines, just now bursting into life, to keep hungry predators like deer, turkeys and opossum at bay, according to owner Katie Krop.
“We started off with electric fencing, but that failed,” Krop said. Not only were turkeys still able to reach in with their long necks, the deer were not deterred by the shock, she said. “Apparently their hair and hooves help keep the deer insulated….
