Community chorus to join orchestra for “Too Hot to Handel: The Gospel Messiah”

The Northern Neck Orchestra (NNO) will perform the Virginia premiere of “Too Hot to Handel: The Gospel Messiah,” a jazz, rock, blues and gospel reimagination of George Frederic Handel’s oratorio “The Messiah,” on May 20 at Northumberland High School in Claraville.

The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. and will be preceded by a pre-concert talk at 6:45 p.m. by music director Michael Repper. Tickets are $40 at www.northernneckorchestra.org, or the door. Students are admitted free.

The program also features three classic works by Johann Sebastian Bach, “Orchestral Suite No. 3”, “Sheep May Safely Graze” and “Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring.”

“This will be one of the most beautiful, moving and uplifting musical performances you will experience,” said Repper.

“The rich array of musical styles, the diversity of the performers and the broad-based chorus of participants from throughout the area will make this event more of a celebration than a concert….
