Northern Neck Audubon Society seeks volunteers for Winter Waterfowl Count

The Northern Neck is positioned between two major rivers—the Potomac and the Rappahannock. Many live here for the “Rivah Life” and so do many waterfowl, especially during the winter, when northern waterfowl travel south to a warmer and more productive winter environment. 

The waterfowl populations in coastal Virginia increase dramatically every winter and are enjoyed by all, whether hunters, photographers, nature lovers or bird watchers—expert or casual. The National Audubon Society has identified 21 “Important Bird Areas” (IBA) in Virginia, many because of the large concentrations of waterfowl in the winter including the Lower Potomac and Lower Rappahannock rivers and Chesapeake Bay marshes.
