Author to speak
A Special Evening With… series will feature author Harold Hinson at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, June 20, at the Lancaster Community Library, 16 Town Centre Drive, Kilmarnock. He will discuss his book, The Hinson Boys of St. John’s Street.
The program is free. It also will be streamed on Facebook Live and can be viewed afterwards on the Library’s YouTube channel.
Children’s tours
The Steamboat Era Museum, 156 King Carter Drive, Irvington, will offer children’s tours from 10:30-noon on Fridays, June 21, 28, July 5, 12, 19, 26, August 2 and 9, for ages 4-12. Turn the wheel in the pilothouse, play steamboat era games and make a wooden steamboat to float in a pool.

NNPP tea
The Clubhouse at Stratford Harbour in Westmoreland County is going to the dogs—and cats. An Afternoon Tea to benefit the Northern Neck Partners for Pets (NNPP) will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, June 22. Seatings will be at noon and 3 p.m.

Ox flute
“A Journey of Ancestral Music and Exploration of the African Ox Flute” will be presented at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 22, at Lancaster Community Library, 16 Town Centre Drive, Kilmarnock. Joshua Allen will present the history, tradition, music and craft of this instrument through demonstration, storytelling and song.

Picnic at Cedardale
Guests are welcome by land or creek to the Picnic at Cedardale to benefit The Longest Day Alzheimer’s Association. The event will be held from 2-6 p.m. June 29 at 74 Cedardale Lane, Irvington, on the eastern branch of Carter Creek.

ν Summer bash
The Virginia Northern Neck Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority will hold an All White Summer Bash from 5-9 p.m. June 29 at the Tappahannock/Essex Fire Hall Outdoor Pavilion, 620 Airport Road, Tappahannock. Guests are invited to dress in all-white attire and bring lawn chairs for a night of music, food and fellowship.

Raise the Roof
Historic Christ Church & Museum, 420 Christ Church Road, Weems, invites the community to its eighth annual “Raise the Roof” from 1-6 p.m. June 29. The event will feature two bands, Virginia craft beer, wine, barbecue (or vegetarian fare) and homemade ice cream.

Bingo night
Summer Daze Bingo Night to support The Haven Shelter & Services will be held July 19 at the Callao Volunteer Fire Department, 314 Northumberland Highway, Callao. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. and the game will start at 7 p.m.

Chicken dinners
Chicken dinners will be available from 5-6:30 p.m. on first Mondays at American Legion Post #117, 39 School Street, Reedville.
Meals include fried chicken, mashed potatoes, choice of vegetables, salad, roll, dessert and drink. Dinners are $12 for adults and $6 for children ages 12 and younger, at the door.
First Africans
The fourth annual First Africans Day at Stratford Hall will return July 27 to commemorate the enslaved Africans and African Americans who built and sustained Stratford Hall and the Lee family for generations.
Throughout the day descendants, historical interpreters and artists will gather with the public to remember and honor those once enslaved at Stratford Hall through music, art, dancing and storytelling. Museum night
A Night at the Museum will be held for ages 7-12 from 5-9 p.m. July 28 at the Steamboat Era Museum, 156 King Carter Drive, Irvington. Enjoy a special craft, games, pizza party, scavenger hunt and the movie “Night at the Museum” with popcorn.
