The second NNK Saltwater Shootout cobia fishing tournament is scheduled for June 29. Sponsorships and registrations are now due.
Tournament proceeds will fund two $1,250 scholarships for seniors of the Northumberland High School Class of 2025. The committee recently presented three $1,000 scholarships to NHS 2024 graduates, according to tournament director Wes Butler of Butler’s Bait & Tackle in Reedville.
“Last year when all said and done, we’d raised over $23,000. So I know $3,000 doesn’t seem like a lot when we raised that much. But the idea is to build the fund to eventually get the River Counties Communities Foundation to manage it,” said Butler. “Then we’ll include not only Northumberland graduates but also Lancaster, because we have a lot of businesses from Lancaster that support us.”
First prize for the angler with the greatest cumulative weight of up to two cobia is $5,000. Second prize is $2,500 and third prize is $1,500. Youth (16 and younger) and lady angler prizes, based on a single cobia weight, also will be awarded. The top three prizes are based on a 75-boat entry.
The entry fee is $200 per boat before June 14 and $225 after, with a cutoff of 7 p.m. June 28. A captain’s meeting….
