Oyster reef restoration efforts continue in Weems

WEEMS—Much like the old saying “mighty oaks from little acorns grow,” two million oyster larvae, as of June 5, are on their way to becoming an oyster reef, a vital part of the health of the surrounding waters and dependent wildlife habitats.

The oyster larvae began their journey from Oyster Seed Holdings on Gwynn’s Island where Jennifer Sagan, oyster restoration specialist with the Friends of the Rappahannock (FOR), picked them up and delivered   them to the old Tides Lodge property in Weems.

Gathering at a shell tank on the property, volunteers helped these microscopic oyster larvae on the next step of their journey by placing them in the tank with 200 oyster shell bags and….
