History talk
The Lancaster Virginia Historical Society (LVHS) and Lancaster Community Library (LCL) will co-host a talk, “Indentured Servants in Colonial Lancaster,” by researchers Margaret Forrester and Karen Hart at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, June 27.
This free public program is part of the summer series, “A Special Evening With…” at LCL, 16 Town Centre Drive, Kilmarnock.
Children’s tours
The Steamboat Era Museum, 156 King Carter Drive, Irvington, will offer children’s tours from 10:30-noon on Fridays, June 28, July 5, 12, 19, 26, August 2 and 9, for ages 4-12. Turn the wheel in the pilothouse, play steamboat era games and make a wooden steamboat to float in a pool.

Museum night
A Night at the Museum will be held for ages 7-12 from 5-9 p.m. Friday, June 28, at the Steamboat Era Museum, 156 King Carter Drive, Irvington. Enjoy a special craft, games, pizza party, scavenger hunt and the movie “Night at the Museum” with popcorn.

Picnic at Cedardale
Guests are welcome by land or creek to the Picnic at Cedardale to benefit The Longest Day Alzheimer’s Association. The event will be held from 2-6 p.m. Saturday, June 29, at 74 Cedardale Lane, Irvington, on the eastern branch of Carter Creek.
There will be food, drinks and music by Cook County Bluegrass and Deadrise. Tickets are $20. Purchase tickets at alz.org/thelongestday (search: Picnic), or Livi’s Market, 4447 Irvington Road, Irvington.
Raise the Roof
Historic Christ Church & Museum, 420 Christ Church Road, Weems, invites the community to its eighth annual “Raise the Roof” from 1-6 p.m. June 29. The event will feature two bands, Virginia craft beer, wine, barbecue (or vegetarian fare) and homemade ice cream.
Tickets are $60 for adults, $20 for ages 20 and younger and free for ages 5 and younger. Additional beverage and meal tickets will be available for purchase. Purchase tickets at ChristChurch1735.ticketleap.com.
Smoking ribs
BBQ master Sid Mace will man the smoker for a BBQ Rib Dinner fundraiser at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, June 29, at Rice’s Hotel/Hughlett’s Tavern (RHHT), 73 Monument Place, Heathsville. The menu also will include appetizers, baked beans, salads and desserts.
Tickets are $30 each; beer and wine are extra. Advance tickets are required. Purchase tickets at the Tavern Gift Shoppe or www.RHHTFoundationinc.org. Takeout meals will be available.
Summer bash
The Virginia Northern Neck Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority will hold an All White Summer Bash from 5-9 p.m. Saturday, June 29, at the Tappahannock/Essex Fire Hall Outdoor Pavilion, 620 Airport Road, Tappahannock. Guests are invited to dress in all-white attire and bring lawn chairs for a night of music, food and fellowship.

Chicken dinners
Chicken dinners will be available from 5-6:30 p.m. on first Mondays at American Legion Post #117, 39 School Street, Reedville.
Meals include fried chicken, mashed potatoes, choice of vegetables, salad, roll, dessert and drink. Dinners are $12 for adults and $6 for children ages 12 and younger, at the door.
Kinsale 4th
Kinsale is prepping for a spectacular Fourth of July community celebration, hosted by the Yeocomico Club, The Slips, The Kinsale Market and the Cople Volunteer Fire Department.
Activities will include a parade from 4-4:30 p.m., food, drinks and music from 5-9:15 p.m., a boat parade on the Yeocomico River from 7:30-8 p.m. and a fireworks show from 9:15-9:30 p.m.
Mathews movie
“Happy Homes and Fertile Farms on Smiling Waters, written and produced in 1999 in Mathews by the late Eugene C. Hudgins will be shown July 12 at the Mathews Museum, 200 Main Street, Mathews. Doors will open at 6 p.m., followed by welcome/remarks at 6:15 p.m. and viewing at 6:30 p.m.
The showing is free and open to the public. Reservations are not required. Coles Hudgins will share stories of his father’s production of the movie.
Bingo night
Summer Daze Bingo Night to support The Haven Shelter & Services will be held July 19 at the Callao Volunteer Fire Department, 314 Northumberland Highway, Callao. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. and the game will start at 7 p.m.
There will be prizes for each of 10 games plus a bonus prize. Tickets are $15 each, including a seat and three cards. Additional cards are $3 each. Purchase tickets by noon July 17 at The Haven Administrative Office, 102 Walnut Street, Warsaw, or havenshelter.org/bingo.
First Africans
The fourth annual First Africans Day at Stratford Hall will return July 27 to commemorate the enslaved Africans and African Americans who built and sustained Stratford Hall and the Lee family for generations.
Throughout the day descendants, historical interpreters and artists will gather with the public to remember and honor those once enslaved at Stratford Hall through music, art, dancing and storytelling. First Africans Day is from 10 a.m.-7 p.m. and is free. To register in advance, visit https://bit.ly/firstafricansday.
