Kinsale 4th

Kinsale is prepping for a spectacular Fourth of July community celebration, hosted by the Yeocomico Club, The Slips, The Kinsale Market and the Cople Volunteer Fire Department.

Activities will include a parade from 4-4:30 p.m., food, drinks and music from 5-9:15 p.m., a boat parade on the Yeocomico River from 7:30-8 p.m. and a fireworks show from 9:15-9:30 p.m.

Children’s tours

The Steamboat Era Museum, 156 King Carter Drive, Irvington, will offer children’s tours from 10:30-noon on Fridays, July 5, 12, 19, 26, August 2 and 9, for ages 4-12. Turn the wheel in the pilothouse, play steamboat era games and make a wooden steamboat to float in a pool.

The fee is $5 for children and one accompanying adult free. Sign up at steamboateramuseum.org or call at 438-6888.

Bluegrass

The Waterview Bluegrass Band will serve up a heaping helping of bluegrass and country classics at 7 p.m. Saturday, July 6, at the Urbanna Firehouse, 335 Virginia Street, Urbanna.

Round up friends, bring the family for an evening of down-home music and good times, while supporting the Middlesex Volunteer Fire Department and Auxiliary. Donations are appreciated.

SEM open house

The Steamboat Era Museum, 156 King Carter Drive, Irvington, will hold an open house from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, July 6 to celebrate the museum’s newest campaign, Full Steam Ahead.

Learn about the history of the Steamboat Era and how the new campaign will help support the museum’s mission.

Mathews movie

“Happy Homes and Fertile Farms on Smiling Waters, written and produced in 1999 in Mathews by the late Eugene C. Hudgins will be shown July 12 at the Mathews Museum, 200 Main Street, Mathews. Doors will open at 6 p.m., followed by welcome/remarks at 6:15 p.m. and viewing at 6:30 p.m.

The showing is free and open to the public. Reservations are not required. Coles Hudgins will share stories of his father’s production of the movie.

Bingo night

Summer Daze Bingo Night to support The Haven Shelter & Services will be held July 19 at the Callao Volunteer Fire Department, 314 Northumberland Highway, Callao. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. and the game will start at 7 p.m.

There will be prizes for each of 10 games plus a bonus prize. Tickets are $15 each, including a seat and three cards. Additional cards are $3 each. Purchase tickets by noon July 17 at The Haven Administrative Office, 102 Walnut Street, Warsaw, or havenshelter.org/bingo.

Chicken dinners

Chicken dinners will be available from 5-6:30 p.m. on first Mondays at American Legion Post #117, 39 School Street, Reedville.

Meals include fried chicken, mashed potatoes, choice of vegetables, salad, roll, dessert and drink. Dinners are $12 for adults and $6 for children ages 12 and younger, at the door.

First Africans

The fourth annual First Africans Day at Stratford Hall will return July 27 to commemorate the enslaved Africans and African Americans who built and sustained Stratford Hall and the Lee family for generations.

Throughout the day descendants, historical interpreters and artists will gather with the public to remember and honor those once enslaved at Stratford Hall through music, art, dancing and storytelling. First Africans Day is from 10 a.m.-7 p.m. and is free. To register in advance, visit https://bit.ly/firstafricansday.
