USD1812 to meet

The Rappahannock Chapter 493 of the United States Daughters of the War of 1812 (USD1812) will meet at 1 p.m. today, July 18, at the Lancaster Community Library, 16 Town Centre Drive, Kilmarnock.

Guest speaker Steve Pope of Mathews County will present “Notes on the War of 1812 and U.S. Revenue Cutter Service.” Prospective members and guests are welcome.

Bingo night

Summer Daze Bingo Night to support The Haven Shelter & Services will be held Friday July 19 at the Callao Volunteer Fire Department, 314 Northumberland Highway, Callao. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. and the game will start at 7 p.m.

There will be prizes for each of 10 games plus a bonus prize. Tickets are $15 each, including a seat and three cards. Additional cards are $3 each. Purchase tickets by noon July 17 at The Haven Administrative Office, 102 Walnut Street, Warsaw, or havenshelter.org/bingo.

Bake sale

Cupcakes for a Cause, a bake sale to support the Alzheimer’s Association, will be held from 1-4 p.m. Saturday, July 20, at Good Luck Cellars, 1025 Goodluck Road, Kilmarnock. Zero calorie cupcakes will be available.

Family reunion

The descendants of Dandridge W. and Naomi Bush Cockrell will hold their 40th family reunion Saturday, July 20, at the Blaine Center in Lively. Descendants are urged to contact the family at cows1956@gmail.com. Put “Family Reunion” in the subject line and name the known descendants and relatives.

Speaker series

Historic Christ Church & Museum’s 2024 Summer Speaker Series, “The First Three: From Washington to Jefferson,” will open July 25 with “Victory or Death: George Washington and the Ten Crucial Days,” by Mark Maloy; continue August 15 with “The Jeffersons at Shadwell,” by Dr. Susan Kern; and conclude September 19 with “Making the Presidency: John Adams and the Precedents That Forged the Republic,” by Dr. Lindsay Chervinsky.

Each program will begin at 5 p.m. with a reception with the speaker followed by the presentation at 6 p.m. at Historic Christ Church & Museum, 420 Christ Church Road, Weems. Tickets are $25 per presentation or $65 for the series. For tickets visit ChristChurch1735.org.

Annual meeting

The Northumberland County Historical Society 2024 annual meeting will convene at 10:30 a.m. July 27 at the Ball Memorial Library and Museum, 86 Back Street, Heathsville. Box lunches will be served at St. Stephen’s Church. Reservations must be received by July 19. Call 580-8581 for reservation instructions.

Following a brief business session at 10:30 a.m., Rev. Dr. Randolph Meade Walker will present “The Heroic Homemaker: Ella Fallin Walker, 1881-1970.” After a lunch break, the meeting will reconvene at 1:30 p.m. for a presentation by Mark Huffman entitled “Capturing Local History with Video.”
