The Virginia High School League (VHSL) recently announced the 2023-24 National Guard Cup winners. The award is presented annually by the Virginia Army National Guard to the highest points earners in Classes 1-6 for year-long athletic and academic success.
The winners were released July 9 by Mike McCall, VHSL director of communications.
Among the repeat winners, Region C Auburn claimed its sixth consecutive Cup and seventh overall for Class 1 athletics. Auburn scored a total of 402.5 points with 150 coming from fall sports, 45 from winter and 207.5 from spring.
Galax was the Class 1 runner-up with 232.5 points while in the Northern Neck District, Lancaster was third with 212.5 points.
A point system determines the winners based on overall performance in VHSL state championship competitions. In athletics, first place earns 50 points; second, 45; third, 40; fourth, 35; fifth, 30; sixth, 25; seventh, 20; and eighth, 15. Schools earning the VHSL Sportsmanship, Ethics and Integrity Award earn 50 points each.
