White Stone supports VDOT’s quest for federal discretionary funding to replace Norris Bridge

WHITE STONE—The White Stone Town Council gave its full support to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) in its effort to seek federal grant funding to help build a new bridge over the Rappahannock River linking Lancaster and Middlesex counties.

Council voted unanimously, 6-0, on July 11 to adopt a resolution to support a VDOT bridge investment program discretionary grant program application which would be submitted to the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) for replacement of the Robert O. Norris Jr. Memorial Bridge. The bridge was constructed in 1957 and has undergone several major repair projects over the last three decades.    

Mayor William Hubbard told council he was contacted by VDOT following last month’s meeting and asked for the town’s support of this application in the form of a resolution by July 18.

USDOT issued a funding opportunity notice on December 20, 2023, for bridge investment program discretionary grant funds to assist with large bridge projects. The fund could cover up to half of the replacement cost, according to town manager….
